crappy chemo side effect of the day

i guess you could post a post a day about each crappy side effect, and i suppose different chemo patients would have varying degrees of crapiness.  Sometimes we all feel we can relate to each other, but sometimes we notice how each experience is unique.
but today, what is bugging me the most is the crying, like pms hormone to the MAX. i can't stop. it's ridic. everything makes me cry:
this episode of chopped
my 12 year old's trials & tribulations, successes & failures
my 9 year olds cute exhaustion that only comes from a good time
happy pretty people walking around town
my friends 1 year old son at the children's museum, innocent smile
the fact that i'm happy
the fact that i'm not done yet
my low GI cookbook (see, it's not your average cry fest)
kindness
my cute daddy
a poem
the past
the future
my tiredness
my reflection
the love

  1. There's no reason you shouldn't have a good cry. Sometimes letting all that emotion out feels very good. A giant virtual hug and kiss! Unfortunately virtual tissues just make the screen kind of icky!

  2. Thank you for saying this. Thank you for honoring this feeling in yourself. We cancer patients have a tendency to keep a stiff upper lip not for ourselves, but for everyone else, who have a terrible time with our discomfort and anxiety and boredom and feeling bad.

  3. Let it out, Nanette. And know I am here if you want a shoulder.

  4. I always say crying is the second best thing you can do for yourself. You are going through a lot (physically and emotionally) and the last thing you need is to try and hold any of that in. Just keep crying and letting those feelings out as they come. And remember that there are friends who love you and would be happy to hand you tissues or let you cry on our shoulders :)

PS- The best thing you can do for yourself? Shopping of course!

  7. Hi Nanette!

I have been following your blog for awhile now and am just blown away by your spirit of optimism and joy. It's incredible and so inspiring to me. I honestly do not know how you do it. I hope you know what a strong woman you are, and that you see resilience when you look in the mirror. You are proof that there is nothing that can't be overcome. I will be hoping and praying for strength, comfort, joy and healing for you. You are an amazing woman and your children are blessed to have you. Thank you for being so transparent and encouraging me to keep my chin up and keep marching no matter what.

    So much love,

  12. You are a brave and shining soul! My heart goes out to you for having to live through breast cancer and the treatment - but you WILL live. Your strength and optimism will help your body heal faster. In the meantime, I admire you for putting it all out there - the good and the bad - and honoring every feeling you're experience. That's healthy and smart and courageous. Keep expressing yourself and looking for the good, even as you acknowledge the bad. Know you are loved.

Wow! Do me a favor and hold onto those two things for a while, all right? Write them down and stick them on your mirror or something if you have to; just remember them!

And it's okay to cry. Sometimes you just have to let it out!

Thoughts and prayers (and virtual hugs) coming your way today!

  18. Crying is so healthy! I often wonder what God truly intended with tears since we cry when we are sad and we cry when we are happy - both ends of the spectrum! He must know that it is needed, maybe a cleanser of sorts? Try to see the positive in your tears, for it is natural and healing and the outward 'showmanship' of the fact that you have feelings to share! Loving you from way over here!

  19. I have been told it is good to cry. Cry till you are done and then cry a little more. Then you can start to move on.

Give yourself the cry you need.

  22. I am absolutely in awe of you. I don't know how I would react to this terrible situation if I were in your shoes ... but I am not convinced that I would be able to handle it with as much grace, dignity and optimism as you have. My mother is definitely the strongest person I have ever known and I'm sure that your children feel the exact same way about you. I am sending you all of the best wishes and good vibes and am hoping for a your speedy and complete recovery. The world needs more amazing people like you around.

  25. Sometimes you just need a good cry. And not that any reason at all wouldn't be valid, but you have a particularly good basis for needing some quality letting-it-out time. I hope the side effects become less severe for you, and I hope that you continue to have happy tears for the beautiful things in your life. Your kids are lucky to have such a cool mom.

  26. Stay strong and positive Nanette. You may not know it now but you are providing your children with the best role-model they could possibly ever want or have. 30. Hi Nanette,

I am a single mother too, and have struggled with health problems of my own. Thank you for sharing your story and optimism. I believe that we are so blessed in so many ways, and life's challenges can be overcome and managed with the right outlook and a great capacity for love and courage. It's okay to cry. It's normal, it's healthy. And it makes smiling and laughing feel all the more wonderful. God bless you.

I am praying for your full recovery, your children's peace of mind and a bright future for you. Take comfort in knowing you are loved by so many people who do not know you but know your story. Like so many, my life has been touched by your plight. My aunt, grandmother and a few co-workers have all faced breast cancer. I know the ravages of chemo and pray that you find comfort as you battle this disease. God be with you.

I am so sorry to hear about your breast cancer diagnosis. I wish you all the luck in the world with chemo and I will be thinking about you and sending you well wishes (and your girls as well). As someone who lost a parent at a young age I really wish your family all the love and strength to make it through this difficult time. Crying is the awesome side-effect of being deeply, truly aligned with the tidal currents of life lived in fullness. Everything affects you, because you are connected to everything. And as such, emotions are stronger, colors brighter, senses richer and more pronounced. Embrace these tears as a gift, a salty communion with the world at large. They help make you glitter all the brighter!

  94. Thought of this groovy poem by Amy Berkowitz

    BEAUTIFUL CRYING

    Sometimes when I’m sad
    For a stupid self-pitying reason
I say what I’m sad about out loud in French
And it sounds beautiful because I am triste
And sitting by a window as the sun sets
And wearing something special made of lace
And when I cry it is beautiful crying
And the tears I cry are very expensive
And an unusual kind of music plays
And it’s in black and white
And everyone who watches it says
That beautiful girl has a legitimate reason to be sad
And women all over the world rush to salons
And ask for the haircut I had

You are not having a pity party. You DO have a legitimate reason to let off some steam and anguish over the situation, or cry for the beauty and joy you see around you, or best of all, cry because you are NOT DONE YET. And, if all else fails and you've had enough, perhaps all you need to do is to dream of black and white movies set in 1920's France!

Lot's of love and blessings your way!
    - Christy

  98. Hey there.
My aunt, godmother, and hero was recently re-diagnosed with breast cancer. She lost her beautiful, long blond hair just in time for her son's wedding, almost had to quit her job as a nurse(she could only work in the oncology wing, with her fellow cancer patients), and a score of other problems. And all this a SECOND time after ten years cancer-free. She is still the strongest person I know. But from what I've read, you're a close second.
Keep fighting. I know you can beat this thing. It doesn't matter how many tears you shed, you've been given a crappy hand, and you're entitled to let it show. I don't if you're religious, but I'll keep you in my prayers.

Even strong people cry, and that's OK. You only have so many tears to cry, but that strength to continue is a part of you. Sending prayers and a little extra strength your way :)

  126. You are amazing.

Crying is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself. There is nothing good out of keeping tears to yourself - when you let them out you share the joy with everyone else.

Keep strong, stay beautiful, and keep inspiring others like me.

  128. Mu mother had breast cancer when I was four. It was really bad, but she has been in remission for a long time. She got through it by listening to meditation tapes. I remember when she started to lose her hair we collected it and made a paper bag puppet.
And when she got her wig, my mind immediately jumped to the conclusion that her hair had miraculously regrown in a morning.
Anyway, I just wanted you to know you aren't alone and if any of this makes you smile, I am happy. Stay strong, you are a beautiful person. :)

  150. Much love to you. Cancer is not a death sentence only a life change sentence. Alkalinize your body (veggie, nut and seed) and watch your immune system take hold. Cancer thrives on sugar (refined and fruit sugar) and in an acidic condition in the body (caffine, meat, dairy, processed food). It cannot survive when the blood is alkaline (lots of greens). No drugs needed. I know many who have cured thru diet. One love and much strength to you.

  155. Dear Nanette,

I am Igor, from Brazil, and when I came to your site to write you a message I thought I was the one who was going to encourage you, but the opposite happened.
One of my best friend's mom had breast cancer a couple years ago and she did the same to me at that time, it is incredible how strong some people find out they are in times like these, and you are clearly a strong person.
Strenght does not come from power, despite what the world may say. Strenght comes from love, love for life, love for people around you.
When you cry, you're not showing weakness, you are showing strenght. Love bounds you to your kids, to the world around you, and this LOVE will cure you I am so sure of it.
My friend's mom vision of the world reminds what I just read in your post and guess what: she got better and despite all the bad side effects she suffered back there, she is 100% OK now. I am so sure that the same will happen to you, because you have the strenght and love for all that is.
As long as you love. As long as you're happy despite being sad sometimes, which is also normal ... as long as you have this power within you ... I am sure you will do fine.
My best wishes for you and for your kids... Me and my friends are sending our good vibes to you ....

    ReplyDelete
  156. Wishing you a successful recovery.

  167. Although too much crying can be annoying, the good part is you are acknowledging all the good things in your life. Crying isn't always related to sadness, it can also be related to joy, relief, exhaustion... It's a way for the soul to get the fullness of emotion out. So let yourself cry and know that a lot of people, near and far, are there to support you!

    Continue on your courageous fight!

    :)

  169. I recently lost two Aunts to Cancer. One was very quick with out a chance to fight. The other had a 13 year battle with lung cancer that amazes not only her family and friends but most every medical professional she had met. She left us when she was ready not when the cancer was. If she listened to the doctors she would have been gone 12 years earlier. You see Nanette, you are not alone, it is people like you and my Aunt that inspire millions. You show us how spirit, determination, and a little bit of faith can move mountains. Thank you for sharing and helping to strengthen my faith. Steady the course and never forget we are behind you following your lead but ready to catch you should you stumble along the way. All my best, keep the faith.
